After consecutive days of heavy rainfall that submerged the homes of thousands of families, the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) has spearheaded the distribution of relief aid to 488 flood-affected families in Mother Kabuntalan, Maguindanao del Norte. This distribution started yesterday, July 27, 2023.

Each family received family food packs containing 25 kilograms of rice, canned goods, and other grocery items.

The recipients reside from the barangays of Payan and Butiren.

Laila Kadir, RSW, Municipal Social Welfare Officer, stated that the distribution of assistance will resume next week for the remaining flood-affected families in other barangays.

“We are targeting to completely deliver the 3,000 family food packs to all our identified flood victims next week, In Shaa Allah,” said Kadir.

Kadir also pointed out that the frequent flooding in the area is due to its geographical location, being a low-lying area and a catch basin for the volume of water from nearby mountains and rivers.

“When it rains here, we expect floods to occur because Mother Kabuntalan is one of the municipalities that serve as catch basins, located alongside the Pulangi River and Rio Grande de Mindanao. The most affected barangays are usually Payan and Butiren,” Kadir added.

MSSD municipal field workers also traversed the river and conducted house-to-house distribution to personally visit and deliver welfare goods to households residing in the far-flung areas of the barangays.

The local government unit and BARMM READI (Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence) also provided additional support to flood-affected families in the municipality.
