Today, November 19, we celebrate World Toilet Day which is an international observance that draws our attention to sanitation problems.

In BARMM, around 3.3 million or 62.13% of the population do not have access to proper sanitation facilities. The problem of sanitation not only leads to diarrheal and intestinal worm infections but exacerbates malnutrition among children. In BARMM, around 236,000 children or 45% of children under 5 years old are stunted.

This fact compromises the Bangsamoro children from achieving their full potential. Thus, have direct and indirect socio-economic consequences like poor cognition and educational performance, low adult wages and loss of productivity.

In the fight to uplift the lives of the Bangsamoro people, the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) is one with the BARMM government in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6 about clean water and sanitation for all. We are one with the government in addressing poor sanitation, cutting the vicious cycle of repeated infection and chronic malnutrition which leads to poverty. MSSD believes that having access to safely managed toilets and water would lead to alleviating the living conditions of the Bangsamoro people.
