In response to the issue on non-birth registration of indigenous people (IPs) in the Bangsamoro region, the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) in partnership with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), conducted series of live birth registration trainings to four (4) target municipalities in BARMM as part of its Free Live Birth Registration Project. The trainings were participated by 3 batches of representatives from the municipalities of Patikul and Parang in Sulu, Hadji Mohammad Ajul in Basilan, and Tandubas in Tawi-Tawi.
A total of 110 participants from the four (4) municipalities attended the trainings. The first batch of participants from municipalities of Patikul and Parang had their training on June 26-29, 2022, at Ever O Hotel, Zamboanga City; second batch from municipality of Hadji Mohammad Ajul on July 1-4, 2022 at the same venue; and third batch from municipality of Tandubas on July 5-8, 2022 at Rachel’s Place, Tawi-Tawi.
Non-birth registration of IPs mostly leads to their exclusion in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and their limited access to other social services available for them.
Part of the objectives of the activity is also to establish a proper database system to resolve the problem on multiple birth registration.
MSSD envisions an increase in birth registration in pilot local government units through this initiative under the Child and Youth Welfare Program (CYWP) of the Ministry.
