BASILAN — In its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the well-being of children, the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) extended its provision of free live birth certificates to 100 indigent children belonging to the indigenous Badjao or Samah-Dilaut group in Tabuan-Lasa, Basilan, on November 13, 2023.

This initiative is a result of collaborative efforts between MSSD, UNHCR, UNICEF, and local civil registrars, aiming to ensure that children have their identities registered and access to fundamental services and opportunities. The recipients of this valuable document were previously unregistered in the local civil registry.

Prior to the distribution, MSSD social workers collaborated with the local civil registrar of Tabuan-Lasa to conduct a thorough validation process, ensuring the accuracy of information for the unregistered children.

During the event, Tabuan-Lasa Mayor Moner Manisan highlighted the significance of birth registration for these children, emphasizing that it empowers them with a sense of identity and upholds their fundamental rights to live peacefully and securely.

“This event serves as a beacon of hope for the children of Basilan, extending to them the embrace of government services that protect their well-being, affirm their identity, and promote their rights and welfare,” Mayor Manisan stated.
