SULU โ Advancing its commitment to empowering persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the Bangsamoro region, the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) organized a talent competition dubbed as “Tagisan ng Talento 2023” and consultation dialogue here on August 15, 2023.
PWD representatives from all 19 municipalities of the province joined the event, providing a platform for them showcase their skills and talents. The winning participants received prizes, with the support of the provincial government’s Office of the Sulu Area Coordinating Center and office of MP Matarul M. Estino.
A consultation dialogue was also conducted, which gave an avenue for the participating PWD leaders to express their needs and aspirations, fostering a space for collective advocacy within the PWD community of the province. Furthermore, the event also saw the election of officers for Sulu’s provincial federation of PWDs.
Also present during the activity were key figures, including representatives from the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO), the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government, former OIC PSWO, and a panel of judges led by a prominent Tausug musician. The rest of the MSSD workforce also played an active role in ensuring the event’s success.
This event is one of the initiatives of MSSD-BARMM that aims to support and empower PWDs, enabling them to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Since 2020, the MSSD-BARMM, through its Older Persons and Persons with Disability Welfare Program (OPPWDWP), has been implementing the Kalinga para sa may Kapansanan Program for indigent and vulnerable persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the region. The beneficiaries of the program receive monthly cash assistance for their basic necessities. Additionally, PWDs may also receive assistive devices and skills training through the program based on their assessed needs.
