COTABATO CITY โ The Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) participated in the 2nd Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) held on June 8, 2023, at the Bangsamoro Government Center in Cotabato City.
Prior to the sounding of the siren, a short program took place at the BARMM Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence (READi) office. The MSSD, along with other ministries and offices of BARMM, participated to demonstrate their commitment to disaster preparedness. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of being prepared for earthquakes, following the duck, cover, and hold protocol.
A mock emergency meeting of the Bangsamoro Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (BDRRMC) was also conducted. The exercise allowed the BDRRMC to simulate their response strategies and coordination in the event of a real earthquake disaster.
Notable figures present during the program at the BARMM READi office included BARMM Senior Minister Abunawas “Von Al-Haq” Maslamama, MSSD Minister Atty. Raissa H. Jajurie, MILG Interior Affairs Service Director Atty. Marvin D. Mokamad, and Mr. Norhassim G. Sinarimbo of BARMM READi.
Minister Jajurie, who serves as the vice chairperson for disaster response in the BDRRMC, played a crucial role in ensuring the MSSD’s active involvement in the earthquake drill.
The nationwide simultaneous earthquake drills (NSEDs) have been conducted quarterly since 2009. These drills aim to engage the participation of both the government and the private sector, fostering a culture of disaster preparedness among the population. By actively participating in the NSED, the Bangsamoro Government of the Day demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the well-being and safety of the Bangsamoro region’s residents.
Disasters, such as earthquakes, can strike without warning, and being prepared can make a significant difference in saving lives and minimizing damage. Through their active engagement in disaster drills and preparedness initiatives, MSSD-BARMM and other BARMM ministries and offices aim to instill a sense of readiness and resilience among the Bangsamoro community, ensuring a safer and more secure future for all.
