MAGUINDANAO DEL NORTE โ The Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) has renovated and inaugurated the Maguindanao action center for women and children in Datu Odin Sinsuat, now known as Kanlungan, in its efforts to provide a safe and conducive sanctuary for vulnerable victim-survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and other forms of abuse.
The renovation of the fully furnished 2-storey facility was initiated by former Member of the Parliament and Deputy Mayor for Chinese Affairs, Narciso Yu Ekey.
MSSD Provincial Social Welfare Officer for Maguindanao Hadja Emma S. Ali, Minister Raissa H. Jajurie and Hon. Ekey led the ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 21, 2023 to officially inaugurate the action center. Kanlungan has a 16-person capacity, complete with bedrooms, a kitchen, comfort rooms, a recreation room, a playground, and a counseling room.
According to Minister Jajurie, “The Kanlungan action center is a concrete manifestation of MSSD’s relevant, responsive, and effective interventions for vulnerable women and children, especially those who are victim-survivors of GBV and other forms of abuse.”
Before admission, the clients will undergo an intake interview, orientation, medical examination, and psychological evaluation through referral (if needed). During their stay, they will be exposed to recreational activities while being monitored by social workers and house parents until their release.
“I am very grateful to everyone who helped in the realization of this project. Let us continue to collaborate on initiatives like this [Bahay Kanlungan] for the welfare of our people” Hon. Ekey added.
“The facility’s complete amenities and dedicated staff will ensure that the clients’ needs are met and that they receive the necessary support and care during their stay” Maguindanao PSWO Ali highlighted.
Present during the event were the wards/residents of the MSSD centers, the officials and staff of MSSD, representatives of IPHO Maguindanao, Women and Children Protection Desk- Maguindanao Police Provincial Office, CRMC, PASWI MagCot Chapter, MOSEP, UNFPA, CFSI Cotabato, Mangungaya Mindanao Inc., and local government units of Brgy. Semba and DOS.
