MANILI, CARMEN – In commemoration of the 51st year of the Manili Massacre, the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD), together with BARMM ministries of Public Order and Safety and of Health, and the Office of the Chief Minister’s (OCM) Project Tulong para sa Bangsamorong Nangangailangan (TABANG) conducted a ceremonial remembrance and extended social interventions to the surviving victims and their families yesterday, 19 June 2022.
MSSD distributed welfare goods to 222 families of the victims and survivors of the massacre wherein each household received 25 kilos of rice, grocery items, hygiene kits, and dignity kits.
OCMโs Project TABANG distributed medicines while MOH also conducted a medical mission.
โTogether with the victims and survivors of the 1971 Manili Massacre, we remember one of the bloodiest incidents in the Bangsamoroโs history where more than 70 people, including women and children, were mercilessly slaughtered. The people of Manili are not forgotten,โ MSSD Chief of Staff Lyca Sarenas emphasized in her statement.
The commemorative activity was an initiative of MPOS, in collaboration with the said BARMM offices, to recognize grievances of the Bangsamoro people and deal with the past. A transitional justice program is one of the agreements between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The program, once installed, is expected to address injustices and human rights violations, exact accountability, set measures to address impunity, and eventually, foster healing and reconcilition.
The Manili Massacre was an infamous carnage that took place in the town of Carmen in North Cotabato on June 19, 1971 when para-military units of the Philippine Constabulary opened fire at a masjid and a school, which killed innocent residents therein.
This atrocious event has been part of the gloomy past of the Bangsamoro during the regime of former dictator President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr.
MSSD and the Bangsamoro Government commit to ensure that the justice is achieved and that necessary social protection services are delivered to the Bangsamoro people.
