After the recent fire incident in Brgy. Poblacion, Bongao Tawi-tawi in the afternoon of September 7, 2023 that devastated more than 300 houses resulting to the displacement of nearly 1,000 families, the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) through its Tawi-tawi Provincial Office started the relief distribution to the victims yesterday, September 8.
In less than 24 hours following the event, the Ministry immediately responded to the needs of the affected families.
Each family received 10 kilograms of rice, welfare goods and trapal from MSSD.
In the continuous relief distribution, a total of 644 families including student renters already received relief aid from the Ministry.
As an additional intervention, MSSD also extended PhP 2,000 each to the families as an emergency assistance earlier today.
MSSD in collaboration with the local government unit also set-up community kitchens at the evacuation sites to provide meals for the victims.
Based on MSSDโs assessment, approximately 1,000 families equivalent to 5,000 individuals were impacted by the fire incident. Most of the displaced families are staying at Salamat Elementary School and Tawi-Tawi School of Fisheries while some are with their relatives.
Aside from the ongoing provision of assistance, MSSD will continue the profiling and assessment of affected families.
Additional non-food items such as trapal, dignity kits and hygiene kits from MSSD are also in transit.
According to Sharmina Julkarnain, MSSD Tawi-tawi Provincial Office’s Project Development Officer, there is a possible increase on the number of reported fire-affected families because the assessment and profiling are still ongoing.
“We’re also looking into other social interventions that can be provided such as emergency shelter assistance and medical aid,” Julkarnain added.
