Dinagat Islands has been levelled to the ground after being battered by Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai). Ninety-five percent (95%) of the structures in Dinagat were damaged, with either roofs, walls, or whole structures destroyed. Ninety percent (90%) of the crops in the island were wiped out by the typhoon while many boats were destroyed. Water and power supply has not yet been restored.
Internally displaced persons are, in general, highly vulnerable especially after a calamity. However, in Dinagat Islands, the total absence of electricity, scarcity of water & food, zero communications across the province, and the destruction of the district hospitals combined with the dwindling supply of medicines has aggravated their situation.
Dinagat Islands, a 4th class province in Mindanao, comprised of seven municipalities and 100 barangays, has a total population of 128,117. More than 116,300 people have been affected by the typhoon.
Food has been running out and the aid from the Bangsamoro Government shall provide the much needed life-saving support.
